Who's Fault?

So I see:

China's Coal Power Plants Mask Climate Change

In part:
The Guardian reports on new research revealing that the huge increase in coal-fired power stations in China, up from just over 10 gigawatts (GW) in 2002 to over 80GW in 2006. . .
And this increase is pumping out shit-tons of carbon but the global warming effects of that are being blocked by the shit-tons of sulphur emissions. OK, even if I accept that, then why the fuck does Obama and his EPA want Cap and Trade here when the real problem is the phenomenal increase in the pollution pumped out by the Chinese? Hmmm?

Contrarian

I once had a friend tell me that I wasn't a libertarian but actually a contrarian. My mother, were she alive, would likely agree. It may be true as when I saw this I thought, "Damn, I'd vote for him just 'cause it'd piss off so many people."

Bad Religion

I'm uncomfortable arguing Obama's faults with committed leftists as it's like saying to a devout Southern Baptist, "You actually believe that a first-century itinerant rabbi was executed by the Romans and came back to life a few days later?" Now I see someone else feels that, "The Left’s political zealotry increasingly resembles religious experience."

Job Loss in Indy?

Saw this headline:

Study: Pacers' Exit Would Cost City 900 Jobs, $18M

and thought, "There's that many bartenders and exotic dancers that the players support?"

We have met the Hippie. . .

. . . and he is us. In a NY Times Op-ed entitled "The Wal-Mart Hippies" I think David Brooks has hit the nail on the head. As he argues:
. . . the Tea Partiers are closer to the New Left. They don’t seek to form a counter-establishment because they don’t believe in establishments or in authority structures. They believe in the spontaneous uprising of participatory democracy.
. . . both the New Left and the Tea Party movement are radically anticonservative. Conservatism is built on the idea of original sin — on the assumption of human fallibility and uncertainty. To remedy our fallen condition, conservatives believe in civilization — in social structures, permanent institutions and just authorities, which embody the accumulated wisdom of the ages and structure individual longings.

That idea was rejected in the 1960s by people who put their faith in unrestrained passion and zealotry. The New Left then, like the Tea Partiers now, had a legitimate point about the failure of the ruling class. But they ruined it through their own imprudence, self-righteousness and naïve radicalism.

And Glenn Beck as the new Abbie Hoffman? Maybe I'll steal his book.

Hajji Ellison

Some of you may be familiar with Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, our first Muslim congressperson. As he's performed the Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca, incumbent upon all Muslims) we might refer to him as Hajji Ellison. That is, if his pilgrimage counted. The gang at Power Line have commented on Congressman Ellison's source of funding for his hajj. He didn't do it out of his own pocket. First it wasn't thenit was the Muslim American Society, the American branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Such duplicity puts the thawab ('religious merit') of his hajj into question as there are certain pre-conditions regarding the Hajj:

All Hajj expenses must be paid out of money obtained through legitimate (Halal) means. Money obtained through illegitimate or doubtful means is not acceptable.

All of your debts and financial obligations must be fully discharged before you start your journey and, where necessary, a written acknowledgement of the transaction obtained for future use.

Well, Keith? Maybe you better go do it again on your own dime.

Shermlock Shomes: Prophet

Back in February of this year I said:
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. . .But I bet it will be YouTubed.
Pretty much the same is being said now over at Little Green Footballs regarding Iran.

Politics In The Classroom

I'm much the same when I teach!

P.S. I was going to school at UW-Madison when they came to do the outdoor shots for this movie. Got to see Rodney Dangerfield saunter around on Bascom Hill.

Senate Bill 12: Common Sense

I wholly support Senate Bill 12 that will prohibit a state college or university from regulating in any manner the ownership, possession, carrying, or transportation of firearms or ammunition.

And State Sen. Johnny Nugent writes to defend himself and his bill. He also repeats something that I all ready know: Colleges and universities can't take away the right of self defense without paying the consequences when its found that they can't defend you after disarming you.

I'm sure, though, that IUPUI's Office of External Affairs is working hard for our university's Administration to keep us disarmed and helpless by lobbying heavily against this bill. Thanks, guys! It's nice to know you care.

The Day After Tomorrow

I saw Pointman's post "Why is Gasoline $1.99?" and his answer,
Because we can’t have gasoline prices cheaper when Bush leaves office than when he came into office - which was the situation 2-3 weeks ago.
and it reminded me of conversations with my brother who said, when we were discussing the Economy being in the crapper, that things would immediately get better after Obama becomes president because the Media will write it that way.

You watch. I bet he's right.

"Don't do as I do. . ."

". . .do as I say." - Grandma Husted

I wonder how Grandma would feel if that's become a standard with those in the government?
