Workplace Safety Indiana University Style

Yesterday all members of the Indiana University Community received the following from IU President Michael McRobbie:

Colleagues,

In the wake of the heartbreaking tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, all those who lead educational institutions feel an increased obligation to take all possible steps to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. I write to inform you of the planning and measures we’ve undertaken and to ask for your help in that effort. The IU Police Department maintains highly trained armed officers on all campuses, and each campus unit has mutual aid agreements with their local municipal and county law enforcement agencies. Response to any shooting incident would be nearly immediate. Given the nature of our campus communities, we continue to enforce a general ban on firearms on our campuses. We have updated emergency and response plans on every campus to better address prevention, response, and recovery from any kind of incident. As part of this effort, a comprehensive exercise and drill schedule is being developed. Exercises have already been conducted at IU-Northwest and IU-South Bend. An active-shooter exercise is planned for IUPUI in Summer 2013. But little of this preparation will be successful unless we all work together to maximize the safety and security of our campuses. IU maintains a robust emergency notification system that can reach students, faculty, and staff within minutes. It is extremely important that everyone register for this alert system. Only you can provide your cell and text number to the notification system. Please do so at http://onestart.iu.edu. This system will be the primary outlet for emergency messages in case of an incident. If you “See Something, Say Something.” Be aware of your surroundings. Report suspicious activities to IUPD. Know the contact information for your campus crisis management and behavioral consultation teams. Do not share your access cards or keys with others. Finally, some time ago we developed a single web site through which a wide variety of general safety and security information is presented: http://protect.iu.edu. Specific to shooting incidents, pay particular attention to the new information at http://protect.iu.edu/police/active-shooter.

There is no fool-proof way to prevent random acts of violence. But if we work together, we can significantly minimize the opportunity for such tragedies to occur at IU while also maximizing the effectiveness of our emergency response.

Exactly! No one needs a vehicle that can go more than 55 mph. I think the Government should expand its powers beyond controlling the technology allowed for firearms (e.g. 30 round magazines) to ALL technology. You don't need a hard drive larger that 200Gb. Large hard drives should be outlawed. You'll just use the extra space to store pirated videos and music. And likely porn, too!

Civil Rights on State-funded University Campuses

Late last year I was part of a group that met with Indiana State Senator Jim Banks to discuss his sponsoring a bill that would prohibit universities that receive state money from taking away our constitutional right to carry a firearm on campus. Being busy, I hadn't keep track of any progress of this until running across the Indiana University Statehouse Report today and seeing:

SB 181 Possession of Firearms on State Property: The bill prohibits a state agency, including a state supported college or university, from regulating the possession or transportation of firearms on land or in buildings that it owns or leases.

While I'm sure my employer's undies are in a bundle, I'm pleased to see that this may go forward.

Armed Robbery

In toto:

IUPUI Armed Robbery May 29, 2011.

On May 29, 2011, at approximately 2:40 a.m., a man approached a visitor at West Michigan St. and Barnhill Dr, and demanded money from the victim. The suspect displayed a handgun.

The suspect left the area after taking a wallet from the victim, and was last seen heading west on Michigan Street in a small vehicle with out of state plates.

The suspect was described as an African American male 25 years of age. He was approximately 6” tall, a thin build; had dreadlocks; was wearing a white t-shirt.

PSH of the Day: Another "Arsenal Of Guns" Found

While some are focusing on news of the "Vet, 77, Busted For Obama Death Threat" "because he is not doing enough to help African Americans," I was interested in the report that his ". . . home was stocked with an arsenal of guns." Cool! I had imagined a whole room with wall-to-wall firearms. Arsenal, right? Well . . .

During a search of Bowden’s home, agents located three semi-automatic handguns and a semi-automatic rifle--all of which were “fully loaded, with rounds in the firing chamber--near his bed. In Bowden’s son’s bedroom, agents found 12 other guns, while a “loaded, short-barrel shotgun” was found near the home’s front door.

That would be judged a good start by myself and a fair number of people I know.

The 9mm Glock with a full magazine of 10 bullets and a holster were discovered in an interior compartment of Robillard’s bag as it went through x-ray machine at the airport’s Checkpoint A at 6:05 a.m. . . .In the police report, there was no explanation from why Robillard had the gun.

Uhh, she had it for personal protection and forgot it was there? According to the article she wasn't licensed to carry it. Whoops!
