No. They're at best "law enforcement officers" who serve to confiscate money from citizens to fill the coffers of local and state government. And, of course, maintain their authority through thuggery, bullying, and general violence.
It used to be that most people saw cops as the good guys. The militarization of the police forces has given the cops an "us versus them" mentality, where they begin to look at everyone who isn't a cop as the enemy. They then treat citizens accordingly. The citizens are becoming more distrustful of the police, and this will eventually get to the point where the police will do something like this, and the citizens will shoot back.
